MAKING RESERVATIONS FOR ONE OF OUR EVENTS?
SCROLL DOWN TO "Upcoming and Past Chapter Events" WELCOME TO THE HOME CHAPTER OF THE LAFAYETTE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION SERVING THE LEHIGH VALLEY AND BEYOND! The Lafayette Alumni of the Lehigh Valley (LALV) is the "home" Chapter of the Lafayette College Alumni Association. We are composed of Lafayette alumni, young alumni, parents and friends who live or work in the Pennsylvania counties of Northampton, Lehigh, Monroe, Carbon and Schuylkill, and the New Jersey Counties of Warren and Hunterdon. Averaging a dozen events per year, we take full advantage of our proximity to the College, with numerous programs featuring Lafayette students, faculty, and facilities. We present a mix of cultural/historical, entertainment, general sports, college sports, and community service activities for your enjoyment. We run bus trips and visits to sites of interest in all of the Chapter's counties and beyond. The chapter also partners with other College organizations such as Admissions, the Maroon Club, Friends of Basketball, Friends of Football, the Williams Center for the Arts, and the College Dining Service, to sponsor student related programs. Of particular pride to us is the LALV Edward A. Ely '76 Memorial Scholarship Fund. It enables the financial aid office to provide annual scholarships to two Lafayette sophomores who graduated from high schools within the Chapter's territory. To date, 41 local students have benefitted from these grants. We also provide recognition for our "home grown" Lafayette students, with annual awards to Lehigh Valley graduating seniors who excelled in Scholarship, Athletics and the Performing Arts during their Lafayette experience. The Chapter continues the tradition of the Danny Hatch '04 Award. This award for school spirit was established by the Easton Area Alumni in 1951, and recognizes an alumnus or friend of the College who has "lent exceptional service to the cause of Lafayette Athletics". It is named in memory of D. Arthur Hatch '04, alumnus and mathematics professor from 1910 to 1948. Known as "Mr. Lafayette", Danny Hatch was an ardent supporter of Lafayette Athletics, and the chief speaker and inspirational leader, especially at football rallies. Requiring "exceptional service", the award has only been given 36 times in the 59 years since its inception. (See below for the history of the award, and a list of its recipients.) The Lafayette Alumni of the Lehigh Valley has been recognized by the College as "Chapter of the Year" three times, in 1988-89, 1990-91 and 2000-01. Participating in Chapter activities is a great way to take advantage of the small college family atmosphere that is Lafayette. Getting to know other alums, students, parents, professors and administrators is a very rewarding experience! For modest dues of $20 annually (starting with the 2010-2011 academic year), dues-paying members receive discounts on the price of some of our events. Dues payments help fund our numerous Chapter activities, (particularly those with student participants who always attend as our guests), but more importantly, duespayers contribute to our ability to grow the Chapter's Ed Ely Memorial Scholarship Fund. Starting with the 2010-2011 academic year, all duespaying members receive an Alumni Card for DISCOUNTS and SPECIAL OFFERS from local participating merchants and fellow alums. Our schedule of activites and information on how to participate is listed under "Upcoming Events" below. Information on dues and the Alumni Card program can be found in the "Dues - Alumni Card -Talent Bank" section. WELCOME! ! PLEASE JOIN US ! ! ! ! ********************************************************************************************************* **************************************************************** ***************************************** ALUMNI NEEDED TO HELP STUDENTS GAIN VALUABLE INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE Lafayette students have wonderful skills and ideas to offer employers and graduate schools after graduation, but they also need professional experience. In this challenging economy, internships are more valuable than ever. In order for Lafayette students to be competitive, they need tangible experience to showcase their skills. Here's where we need alumni support. Career Services asks you to consider offering a summer internship for a student. If you are unable to offer an opportunity yourself, you can provide us with information about internships at your place of employment. Please contact Rachel Nelson Moeller '88 at moellerr@lafayette.edu or 610-330-5115 to discuss how you can help. ____________________________________________________________ |

(Information and quotes are from "The Biography of a College - A History of Lafayette College 1927-1978" by Albert W. Gendebien '34)
The year 1951 marked the 125th anniversary of the granting of the College Charter in 1826 by the state of Pennsylvania.
On the Friday night of Founders' Day Weekend in the fall of that year, the Easton Area Alumni's annual dinner honored 125 alumni who were active in their alumni clubs. The following day, the group marched in the academic procession to the Founders' Day Exercises. At the ceremony David Arthur (Danny) Hatch, class of 1904, a member of the mathematics faculty from 1910, and Associate Professor from 1925 until his retirement in 1948 at age seventy, was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree.
"Danny Hatch is remembered as "Mr. Lafayette", the chief speaker and inspiration at all football rallies, the embodiment of school spirit".
As part of the festivities, the Easton Area Alumni Club (Now called Lafayette Alumni of the Lehigh Valley) established the Danny Hatch '04 Award to honor consummate boosters of the Lafayette Athletic Program. The award is for exceptional service to the cause of Lafayette Athletics, and has only been given 36 times in the 59 years since inception.
Plaques honoring the winners are on display in the main lobby of Kirby Sports Center.
